금년 한 해 동안에는 이런 열풍이 더욱 뜨거워 질 것으로 보입니다. 금년 한 해 동안에는 더 많은 이벤트들이 생겨날 것이고 더 많은 관심이 몰리고 더 많은 에너지가 분출될 것입니다. 이처럼 여러 곳에서 분출되는 에너지가 서로 모순 충돌을 빚지 않고 조화로이 각자 자리에서 필요한 목소리를 내준다면 한국 사회에 어떤 식으로든 긍정적인 임팩트를 끼칠 수 있음은 분명해 보입니다.

그런 차원에서 TEDxSinchon과 TEDxGeumchon은 국내에서 일어나고 있는 많은 테드엑스 이벤트들 가운데 자기 아이덴티티를 명확히 구축한 좋은 사례들이 아닌가 하고 생각합니다.

지난 1월 29일 열린 TEDxSinchon의 테마는 Successful Failure였습니다. 이벤트의 디렉터였던 문주용씨는 말합니다. “한국사회는 실패에 가혹합니다. 좋은 경험이라도 그 결과가 실패라면 쉽게 인정해주지 않습니다. 수많은 실패가 필요한 벤처업계에서 실패를 인정해주지 않습니다. 망하면 대표의 삶은 망가지기 십상이지요. [...] 이러한 한국사회의 분위기는 수많은 이들에게 보이지 않는 족쇄가 되고 있습니다. ‘실패가 두려워서’ 불확실한 것에 도전하지 않습니다. ‘실패할 가능성이 매우 적은’ 안정적인 삶이 부러움의 대상이 되고 높은 가치를 부여받습니다.”

그제 행사장에서 들었던 이야기들도 실패 이력서를 써봄으로서 실패를 객관하고 이를 개인의 자산화 한다는 스탠포드의 사례에서부터, 선택은 하나에서 열까지 다 가지는 게 아니라, 하나를 취하고 아홉 가지를 버리는 것이라는 것까지 좋은 이야기들을 많이 들을 수 있었습니다.

미국의 경우 스타트업과 벤처에 투자되는 액수가 GNP대비 0.7%인데 여기에서 창출되는 경제적 효과가 17%에 이른다고 합니다. 이것이 가능했던 이유는 실패가 낙인이 되는 것이 아니라 훈장이 되는 실리콘벨리의 문화적 토양이 있었기 때문이었을 겁니다.

지금껏 두 번에 걸쳐 “성공적인 실패”에 대해 이야기해 온 TEDxSinchon 앞으로도 계속 발전하며 한 목소리를 내준다면 한국 창업계의 분위기 점차 훈훈한 바람이 불게 되지 않을까요? (흐)

1월 30일에 열렸던 TEDxGeumcheon은 굉장히 실험적인 이벤트였습니다. 서울 안에서도 소외된 지역으로 꼽히는 금천에서 “금천의 영웅들”이라는 테마로 철저하게 “금천”이라는 지역에 초점을 맞추고 있었습니다. 금천구에서 자랐고 금천구에서 학창시절을 보낸 후 교사가 되어 모교로 올아온 조연희 선생님, 시민단체와 정당활동을 하면서 늘 한계로 느끼던 ‘소통’의 문제를 해결하기 위해 금천 마을신문을 신문 이성호 창간인, 평생의 보금자리였던 아파트가 철거되는 과정을 겪으며 지역과 환경에 대한 고민을 하게 된 금천 토박이 주민 조임현 님 등, 금천구의 생생한 목소리를 담아낸 것이지요.

저에게 개인적으로 와 닿았던 부분은 지역의 “영웅”이라는 컨셉이었습니다. “나도 저렇게 되고 싶다!”가 있어야 하는 하는데, 이런 게 없는 롤 모델이 부재한 사회에서 사람들은 길을 잃게 되기 십상이잖아요. 그런 점에서 동네의 숨은 영웅을 발굴하려는 TEDx금천의 시도를 높이 평가하고 싶었습니다.

점점 로컬 커뮤니티의 역할과 중요성이 커지는 이 시점에서 TEDxGeumcheon이 효시가 되어 TEDxSeongbuk이 생기고, TEDxSeodaemun이 생겨 그 지역의 숨어있는 진주를 발굴하고, 가치를 인정해 주고.. 금년 TEDx 의 화두는 이런 훈훈한 취지의 움직임들을 의도 그대로 사회 곳곳의 선순환으로 이어질 수 있도록 서로 간에 힘을 실어주는 것이 아닐까 합니다.

두 행사 모두 갓 걸음마를 뗀 단계이니만큼 만큼 아직은 프로덕션상 미비한 점이 없지 않았지만, 취지와 기획자체가 좋은 만큼 이를 잘 이어나갈 수 있길 기대해 봅니다.

윤여준 – 한국 지방 발전 연구원 이사장

윤여준은 1966년부터 언론, 공직, 정당을 거치면서 대한민국 현대사를 관통하는 경험을 가지고 있는 대표적인 원로 정치인이다. 어릴 적부터 정치인이 되고자 하는 꿈을 가진 적은 한번도 없었지만 시대가 그를 그 곳으로 인도했고 그 역시 그것을 회피하지 않았다. 그 후 청와대 공보수석, 환경부장관, 남북정상회담 교섭대표, 한나라당 여의도연구소장, 한나라당 총선&대선 기획위원장 등을 역임하며 언론을 통해 ‘책사’, ‘제갈공명’ 등의 닉네임과 함께 정치 공학의 귀재라는 평을 듣게 된다. 하지만 정작 본인은 정치란 민심을 그대로 보는 것이며 그러기 위해서는 사심이 없어야 한다는 소신과 함께 ‘상식인’으로 불려지기를 바란다. 2004년 ‘귀거래사’라는 말과 함께 정계를 떠난 그는 그동안 사회에서 받은 것들을 다시 돌려주고자 평화재단, 한국지방발전연구원, 원폭 피해 2세를 위한 합천 평화의 집 등에서 활발한 연구와 다양한 활동에 정력적으로 참여하고 있다.

Yeo-joon Yeo is a seasoned politician whose life path walks parallel with modern Korean history. His professional experience, which starts from 1966, pans media, public service and politics. He had never dreamed of himself as a politician, but when life, and more importantly, Korea, asked him to be one, he welcomed the opportunity. He occupied a number of public posts, including the Blue House Office of the Press Secretary, the Minister of Environment, and South Korean representative for Inter-Korean Summit. As a member of the Grand National Party (a.k.a., “Hannara”), he has served in major leadership roles such as President of Youido Institute, and the Chairperson of the Election Planning Committee. Yeo-joon has become known for his political tactics, and is often dubbed “strategist” and “Zhege Liang”. Nonetheless, deep down, he feels that politics needs to empathize with the grass roots and therefore, he wishes to earn the moniker “common sense” and “integrity.” Since 2004, he has left politics and is dedicated to giving back to society what he has received. He is currently an active volunteer for the Peace Foundation, Korea Local Development Institute, and Hapcheon Peace House for second-generation atomic bomb victims.

장혜영은 다큐멘터리, 애니메이션, 글쓰기를 하는 창작자다. 대한민국 1호 애니메이션 고등학교 출신 언니가 대충 공부하고 대학가는 것을 보고 애니고 영상과에서 있다가 영상이 정말 좋아져서 영상원에 지원했다가 떨어지고는 부모님께 홧김에 효도한다는 심정으로 연세대학교 신문방송학과에 입학한다. 잡다한 작업자라고 자칭하는 그녀는 즉흥적으로 틈틈히 누군가에게 할 말이 있을 때는 영화를 찍고, 애니메이션을 만든다. 가장 최근 작업한 다큐멘터리인 <다크나이트를지켜죠> 역시 인터넷에 떠도는 자막들을 제작한 사람들에 대한 궁금증에서 시작, 제법 진지한 디지털 시대의 저작권법의 본질에 대한 고민을 다루게 되었다고 한다. 그녀는 마켓이 아닌 사람이 보이는 네트워크를 통한 컨텐츠에 대한 믿음을 갖고 있다.

JANG, Hye Yeong – Documentary, Animation creator. @superrabbitbear

Hye Yeong is a creator in the field of documentary films, animation, and writing. Her elder sister graduated from Korea’s 1st high school specialized in animation and it didn’t seem to take too much effort to get into a university for her. Hye Yeong attended the same high school and she wanted to continue her study at the school of film and multimedia. Unfortunately it was not so easy for her and she did not make to the department and the university where she wanted to be. In a fit of anger, or perhaps to be a good daughter to her parents, she applied to the department of mass communication at Yonsei university. She likes to work on many different things such as making a film or an animation when she wants to talk to someone. Her most recent work is a documentary called <Plz save me>. It started from her personal curiosity about the people who creates subtitles and upload to the Internet. This led her to a deeper thought on the nature of the copyright law in the era of digital media. She has a faith in the spreading of contents via network of people, not commercial market.

<바르게 살자> <국경의 남쪽> <박수칠 때 떠나라> <피도 눈물도 없이> <실미도> <범죄의 재구성> <한반도> <킬러들의 수다> <굿모닝 프레지던트> 등등. 그가 음악을 담당한 영화들이다. 영화감독 장진과 오랫동안 호흡을 맞추고 있고, 강우석, 최동훈, 류승완 감독과도 작업을 같이한 실력 있는 영화 음악가다. 그는 연극판에서도 잔뼈가 굵은 사람이기 때문에 연극이나 공연 음악에 깊은 애정을 가지고 있다. 배우 박광정 씨가 세상을 뜬 이후에 잠시 연극 음악을 쉬고 있지만, 내년이면 그는 다시 그곳으로 돌아간다고 한다. 벌써 작업실엔 대본이 쌓여가고 있다. 공연 음악은 현장의 맛을 느낄 수 있어 매혹적이라고 설파하는 그는 공연 음악을 만들 때면 항상 현장으로 간다. 그리고 연습실과 공연장에서 자신의 음악에 반응하는 관객을 살핀다. 여기에서는 음악이 주목받거나 두드러지지 않아 그의 습성에 맞는다고. 장진 감독은 그의 음악을 “훌륭한 조연이다”라고, 강우석 감독은 “기생”이라고 말했다. 그는 자신의 음악이 ‘소리’보다 ‘마음’을 갖기를 바라는 듯하다.

<Going by the book>, <South of the border>, <The big scene>, <No blood no tears>, <Silmido>, <The big swindle>, <Hanbando>, <Guns and talks>, <Good morning, president>. These are some of the movies music director Jae-Gweon has been in charge of. A man of substantial ability, he has been working with renowned Korean movie directors such as  Jang Jin, Kang Woo-Seok, Choi Dong-hoon, and Ryoo Seung-wan. Not only that. His genuine interest in theater and deep understanding have also had great influence on live-stage performance music, though the death of the actor Park Kwang-Jeong made him take some rest from theater. He believes that the beauty of the performances resides in the tastefulness of on-site live music, enough reason for him to personally go on-site whenever it’s necessary. Back stage or in rehearsal rooms where music is subtly or even hardly perceived, Jae-Gweon likes to observe how the audience reacts. Movie director Jang Jin says Jae-Gweon’s music is “an excellent co-actor” while Kang Woo-Seok compares it to a “gisaeng” (female entertainers of the Chosen dinasty era). For him music is not about sounds but about minds.

박혜주는 클래식 성악을 전공하고 뮤지컬 작품 및 노래 분석과 이해, 무대구성, 노래 부르는 방법을 지도하는 일을 하고 있다. 그녀는 다수의 오페라, 클래식, 뮤지컬 공연을 해왔으며 지금은 뮤지컬 작품을 중심으로 노래를 지도 하고 있다. 노래를 잘 부르는 것은 고음과 같은 기교를 구사하고 가수처럼 흉내내듯 부르는 것이 아니라고 말한다. 진정한 노래는 부담 없이 내가 표현하고자 하는 것을 아름답게 잘 전달할 수 있어야 한다고 설명한다.  우리는 노래를 말과 같은 감정의 표현수단임에도 불구하고 다르다는 틀안에 가두고서 때로는 어려운 존재로 치부한다. 하지만 진짜 노래를 잘 하는 법은 기본을 지키고 따르는 것에 있으며 이러한 것들은 우리가 이미 알고 있음에도 다른 것에 치중하는 욕심 때문에 진짜 노래를 즐기는 마음을 잃어버리고 있음을 알려준다. 생각이 바뀌면 노래 실력이 변한다는 간단한 방법을 이해하고 실습해보면서 그로 인해 자신감 있게 자신을 표현하는 방법을 찾는 것이 중요하다고 설명하는 그녀는  사람들이 요리책에서 요리법을 찾아이해하듯 쉬운 노래법을 담은 책을 저술, 곧 출판예정이다.

Hyeju Park is a professional musician and teacher with a background in classical vocal arts. As a teacher, she provides guidance to students in musical style and interpretation, vocal performance, and stage composition. She has performed in a number of opera, classical works, and musicals. Currently, her teaching most often revolves around musical pieces. Hyeju argues that a good singer does not sing with fancy techniques. Rather, a good singer communicates with the least pretense what she wishes to convey to the audience. To her, singing is just another way of communication, just as speaking is. Therefore, she believes that a good song needs to be based on the fundamentals, not on fancy techniques. Think differently, and you will sing differently, Hyeju says. Sing with confidence, and a humble wish to express yourself, and you will sing differently, she adds. Her book, which gives guidance to laymen on singing,  is expected to come out soon.

윤종수는 CCL(Creative Commons License)의 국내 버전을 런칭하였다. CC Korea의 제1호 발룬티어이며 6년째 프로젝트 리드로 활동하고 있다. 그는 서울대학교 법과대학을 졸업하고 판사로 임관, 현재 인천 지방법원 부장판사로 재직 중이며 한국 정보 법학회의 간사를 역임했다. CCL의 취지는 자신의 저작물을 몇가지 조건하에 누구나 자유롭게 이용할 수 있도록 해서 더 많은 저작물, 창작물이 나오게 하는 Open for Innovation이다. 그는 IT뿐만 아니라 문화, 사회를 관통하는 오픈을 통해 사람과 사회를 오픈하고 싶다. 단순히 컨텐츠를 공유하고 오픈하는 것을 넘어 진정한 혁신을 위한 열린 문화와 열린 사회가 그가 바라고 활동하는 CCL의 가치이다. 그는 가장 효과적인 저작권 교육은 저작권을 가르치는 것이 아니라 창작을 가르쳐야 한다고 믿는다. 창작의 기회와 문화적 자극을 나눌 수 있는 시스템을 마련하고, 그 사용법을 가르쳐주는 것이 진정 필요한 저작권 교육이라고 한다.

Jongsoo Yoon is a pioneer and expert in legal issues involving intellectual property. He has a law degree from Seoul National University. He is currently Presiding Judge at Incheon District Court, and has served in an administrative capacity at Korea Association for Infomedia Law. Six years ago, he founded the Korean branch of CCL (Creative Commons License), and has headed the organization since then. CCL is a non-profit organization dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright. Its mission is to create a society that is “open for innovation.” CCL believes that an open society does not simply share knowledge, but promotes innovation. Along the same line, Jongsoo believes that educating people in copyright awareness need be about open creativity, rather than about closed ownership. Jongsoo wishes to build a commons-based infrastructure that supports sharing not just across information technology, but across all components of “people”, such as culture, and society.

Howard Chan _ Social Curator

Howard is a curator but he does not work for a typical gallery. He is more interested in working with social resources, and is an active leader of CMP (Community Museum Project) in Hong Kong. CMP collects knowledge and skills that are small but matured from the locals, and therefore, the main agents of creativity are always the people and the society of our local neighborhood. He reviews and reinvents nameless designs to something valuable. For example, a project called “Project: In Search of Marginalized Wisdom” lets residents with traditional skills, designers, and architects to collaborate and create something totally different. Every product aims to be made by the idea of upcycling. The reason for him to run these projects are related to the change in the economics. Skilled workers are losing their job and becoming housekeepers and securities. Also, the redevelopment of old town takes history, culture, and livelihood away from the residents. He is trying to drag knowledge and skills from those people back to the society. He is working hard to develop these studies into forms of exhibition, collaboration, or even as a new start up. In Korea, he ran <Dissatisfaction Museum> project in Anyang after gathering all kinds of discontent from the local people and visualize the collections.
