빌 드레셀하우스

홍익대 디자인학부 교수, 드레셀하우스 그룹 CEO

빌 드레셀하우스는 홍익대학교 산업디자인 학과의 초빙 교수이자 경영혁신 컨설팅 펌인 드레셀하우스 그룹의 CEO이다. 그는 <애플>사에서 프로덕트 디자인  매니저로 재직하며 디자인 혁신의 선도 그룹중 일원으로 임했다. 매킨도시의 전신이 되는 컴퓨터를 만든 <애플 리사 컴퓨터>사의 초기 혁신가이기도 했던 그는, 인포커스 시스템의 디자인 매니저로 일할 당시 회사 초기3개 모델의 프로젝터를 시장에서 연달아 히트시켰다. 학교 수업과 별도로 수많은 워크샵과 컨퍼런스에서 디자인 개념을 탑재한 사고과 프로세스를 주제로 이야기 한 바 있다. 그의 청중은 학습장애가 있는 학생에서부터 직장인들까지 폭넓은 대상을 아우른다.


"수업시간마다 저는 학생들과 함께 프로젝트를 진행합니다. 워크샵에서도 마찬가지죠. 주제는 디자인적 사고와 프로세스입니다. 프로젝트를 진행 할 때마다 저는 그 결과물을 보며 늘 인간이 가진 잠재력에 경탄하곤 합니다. 결과들 수준이 거의 마술 수준이거든요. 특히 청중이 디자인에 대해 아무것도 모를 때에는 특히 더 그렇습니다. 예외가 없어요. 학생과 청중들이 엄청나게 즐거워하니 저자신 까지 덩달아 신이 나더군요. 저는 디자인이 세상을 좀 더 살기 좋을 곳으로 만들기 위해 반드시 장려되어야 하는 것이라고 믿습니다. 왜냐하면 디자인은 인간의 필요와 능력과 활동의 차원을 아우르는 인간의 가장 자연스러운 본성이기 때문입니다. 최근 디자인적 사고의 조류의 한가운데에는 참여와 민주라는 키워드가 있습니다. 디자인의 혁명은 나이를 가리지 않습니다. 모두가 디자인을 하는 시대가 오고 있습니다. 디자인을 가르치는 사람들이 이러한 흐름을 잘 받쳐 주는 것이 중요할 것입니다."

Bill Dresselhaus
Bill Dresselhaus is a Joint Invited Professor of Product Design and Mechanical Engineering at Hongik University in Seoul, Korea, and President/CEO of Dresselhaus Group, Inc., a design, management and innovation consultancy. Bill was one of the early design innovators at Apple Computer and was Product Design Manager there and Principal Product Designer of the Apple Lisa Computer, the forerunner of the first Macintosh. He was also later the Product Design Manager at InFocus Systems, leading the company product design with their first three market-dominating digital projectors. Besides his teaching, Bill has conducted many successful workshops in design thinking and process with a variety of groups ranging from learning-disabled high school students to Korean business professionals.

"Every time I conduct a student project or professional workshop on design thinking and design process, especially with participants with non-design backgrounds, the results in both the outcomes and the human potential are like magic: it simply works every time and is extremely exciting and inspiring for everyone, especially for myself. I believe that design is a natural, innate human need, ability and activity that we must draw out, foster and develop in everyone for designing a better world. The current trends of comprehensive design thinking, participatory design and the democratization of design are right on target. It is now the task of design educators and trained designers to facilitate and coach that revolution with educational design experiences for all ages."
